Poor Heart Health Linked to 17x Greater Risk of Musculoskeletal Disorders
Those at higher risk of heart disease also have as much as a 17 times greater risk of developing certain musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), according to a recent study. This includes disorders like carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, and rotator cuff tendinopathy (pain and weakness when moving the shoulder).
The study involved data covering a 9-year span from over 1,200 participants. Cardiovascular risk scores were assessed for each participant as well as information like medical conditions, exercise habits, and job-related physical activity.
After adjusting for other factors, researchers found that those who had a 15% higher-than-average risk of heart disease were 4 times more likely to develop one or more MSDs and 17 times more likely to develop four or more MSDs than those with average heart disease risk.
The study involved only a limited portion of the general population, but the results reinforce the importance of heart health for maintaining overall health. Top guidelines for protecting your heart include getting regular exercise, eating a healthy diet, not smoking, and managing stress.
Eating Earlier Can Improve Blood Sugar, Slow Prediabetes
Eating the majority of total daily calories before 1 p.m. could be an effective strategy for improving blood sugar and countering weight gain, some new research has found. This is an approach known as early time-restricted feeding (eTRF) and may particularly help individuals with prediabetes.
“We decreased the time these individuals were having high blood sugar levels with just one week of eTRF feeding,” said José O. Alemán, MD, PhD, senior study author. “The findings show that eating a majority of one’s calories earlier in the day reduces the time that the blood sugar is elevated, thereby improving metabolic health.”
The study was a small one involving only 10 participants. It compared eTRF (80% of calories eaten before 1 p.m.) with more traditional eating habits (50% of calories eaten after 5 p.m.). When participants switched to the eTRF pattern, they experienced significant improvements in blood sugar fluctuations.
The study authors caution that more studies are needed to confirm these results, but believe that following eTRF guidelines could be “a helpful dietary strategy for diabetes prevention”.

Ginger Compound Boosts Immune System, White Blood Cells
Gingerol is the pungent plant compound that gives ginger root its spicy kick. Some new research shows that it also gives this popular spice the ability to boost immune function, specifically by putting white blood cells on “high alert”. Interestingly, some prior research found that significant amounts of gingerol can enter the blood only 30-60 minutes after drinking ginger tea— which you can make yourself by simmering fresh ginger root in water for 15 minutes. Toxic Chemicals Can Migrate from Labels to Fresh Food
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a toxic chemical linked to prostate cancer, breast cancer, and hormone interference. It’s most commonly found in plastic products, the lining of food cans, and food labels. Some countries have sought to phase out BPA but only to replace it with similar chemicals, like Bisphenol S (BPS), that are showing similar toxic effects in studies. Now, some new research has shown that BPS actually migrates from thermal food labels to fresh packaged foods like vegetables, cheeses, and baked goods, making the dietary intake of it higher than previously thought. Omega 3 Fatty Acids May Slow ALS Decline
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a rare neurodegenerative disease that involves loss of controlled muscle movement and other progressively worsening symptoms. There is currently no treatment that can reverse the progression of ALS, but a recent study has found that eating foods high in omega 3s could help slow ALS decline. Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) was the most beneficial omega 3 and is found in foods like flaxseeds, walnuts, chia seeds, hemp seeds, and vegetable oils. (More)
